Foxglove

Digitalis purpurea

Scrophulariaceae

Digitalis purpurea is a beautiful, biennial herb popular in flower gardens. In its first year, it forms a rosette of basal leaves. In its second year, it sends up a hairy, erect stem usually 3-4 feet high. Its wrinkled broad leaves are lanceolate. Its large bell-shaped flowers range from purplish-pink to white and have dark purple spots surrounded by white on the inside.

The leaves of Foxglove are used in the pharmaceutical industry to make cardiac medicine intended to strengthen and regulate the heart. All parts of Foxglove are extremely poisonous and should never be consumed to self-medicate. Ingestion can result in death.
