Sweet Wormwood

Artemisia annua

Compositae / Asteraceae
Composite / Aster Family

Common name: Sweet Annie

Sweet Annie (A. annua) is a Eurasian species, one of about 200 species within the Artemisia genus and Aster Family.

Wormwoods are known for their bitterness, but Sweet Wormwood is more delicate and is used for its essential oil which has strong antifungal, antibacterial, and anti-malarial properties.

Sweet Wormwood is often grown as an ornamental. It can reach six feet in height and makes a good background or accent plant. With its fern-like leaves, bright yellow flowers, and camphor-like scent, it is a plant of interest to both gardeners and craft people. Arranging and fastening clusters of the small, yellow flowers onto a round frame is the way to make a Sweet Annie wreath. Jo Ann Gardner mentions this, as well as instructions for growing the plant, in her excellent book, Herbs in Bloom.
